To make your stove or fireplace a satisfying experience, it is essential that it be the size and power you really need. The island of Mallorca has a great diversity of microclimates, drier areas and wetter areas. If the fireplace is too large, you will always run it at low speed and end up with unwanted soot buildup on the glass and ductwork. If your stove is too small, it may be too demanding and will last less time.
Our stove specialist in Mallorca needs information about the area to be heated and the type of insulation to advise you properly. In general, a house with good thermal insulation and insulated windows needs a heat output of 60-70 watts per m2. To heat an area of 70 m2 it is therefore necessary to generate a continuous fire that generates about 4.5KW. Ideally, therefore, some extra kW should be calculated for extreme cold periods, but this calculation may be affected by insulation, number of windows, ceiling height, etc.

To function properly, a fireplace or stove needs an air supply. The chimney draws air from the fireplace, but if your home is particularly well insulated, or if you have mechanical ventilation systems or exhaust hoods that compete with the natural draft of the chimney, operating problems may be experienced. The recommended solution is to connect an outside air supply. You can provide this outside air by installing air grilles in the wall or by creating a separate air duct from the outside to the bottom of the stove or fireplace.
Windows and insulation
Older, poorly insulated houses require considerably more heat than well-insulated houses with double-glazed windows. Energy losses in poorly insulated houses are well known, but if on the other hand we find well insulated houses with high energy efficiency, we will need a stove that has a supply of outside air and that works efficiently even at low regimes. The Jøtul F 160 range is a good example of this with optimum combustion from as little as 3kW.
4. Duct and chimney
Most problems with wood stoves and fireplaces stem from an improperly sized or malfunctioning chimney. For optimum performance, the flue pipe should have an internal diameter larger than that of the flue outlet of the fireplace or stove it serves. The installation manuals contain information about the required vacuum or draft for optimum performance.
A basic rule of thumb is that one meter of conduit provides four Pascals of draft or depression. Almost no home can operate with less than 12 Pascals. Sharp bends in your chimney reduce draft. If you are not sure which fireplace you need, your Jøtul dealer can advise you.
5. Where to place your stove or fireplace in your new home in Majorca
Every fireplace or stove is different. Some are designed to be placed close to walls or combustible materials (even wooden walls), and others require fireproof coatings to be placed close to the wall. Take into account the distance to combustible materials specified by the manufacturer, and the materials in your home.
6. Weight and load supported by the pavement
Most Jøtul stoves, fireplaces or cassettes can be installed without the need for floor reinforcement, but to play it safe, a weight estimate should be made. According to Norwegian standards, each square meter of floor can guarantee a load of 150 kg. The weight of a chimney should be divided between the area covered by the hearth plus an additional 0.6 meters in each direction.
Thus, the weight of a household occupying a basic area of 0.5 x 0.5 meters is spread over an area of (0.6+0.5+0.6)m x (0.6+0.5+0.6) m = 2.89 m2. Thus, a home with a basic area of 0.5 x 0.5 meters can weigh up to 433 kg (2.89 m2 x 150 kg/m2). Normally the hearths are placed against a wall which slightly limits the surface area to be evaluated. Ask for professional help if this is difficult for you.
